Brayan likes to say that his nickname Butterz comes from shooting 3-pointers that go in like butter, but he actually got it before playing basketball: it comes from his resemblance with a character from the TV show South Park.
Last summer, while walking past the iconic West 4th basketball court in Lower Manhattan, Butterz became fascinated by the place. Also known as “The Cage”, this court is a gathering spot for some of the best players from all over town. Roughness, trash-talking and the presence of an audience are part of the unique, competitive atmosphere.
Few 12 years old white kids are confident enough to enter and try to play.
But Butterz started coming every day after school.
This project was made in 5 days during a workshop with Magnum’s photographer David Alan Harvey.
